Information: Gender, as it affects folk dance


COMMENT

Mixed-sex circle and solo dancing began in the Balkans only as recently as the 1960s or 1970s (refer to Elsie Dunin's works in Makedonski Folklor), particularly among Romani and Muslims and particularly in rural areas. Even now, however, many kinship-based rules direct who may dance beside whom.
