Greenland

BACKGROUND

Information: A country.

Greenland is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe, specifically Denmark and Norway, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland, for millennia.

In 1979, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland, and in 2008, Greenlanders voted in favor of the Self-Government Act, which transferred more power from the Danish government to the local Greenlandic government. On June 21, 2009, Greenland gained self-rule with provisions for assuming responsibility for self-government of judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources.

Today Greenlandic culture is a blending of traditional Inuit (Kalaallit) and Scandinavian cultures.
