LINER NOTES

Zheko Angelov is a young singer, characteristic representative of the Thracian song folklore from the Harmanli district. His beautiful voice with a pleasant timbre masterfully performs the merry horo songs. The intricate and exceptionally beautiful ornaments of the slow songs are sung with great expressiveness and warmth. A living proof of the folk singer's talent is the performance of the song "Kogato trûgneshe ti, malka mome" (When you, little girl, start on your way) included in the present release.

Zheko Angelov was born on April 7, 1948 in Lyubimets, Haskovo district. Since childhood he has loved the folk songs which his mother sang to him. It was from her that he inherited his repertoire.

In 1976 Angelov graduated from the Folk Department of the Higher Music-Pedagogical Institute in Plovdiv and began work as a choir-master of the Choir at the Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances in Harmanli.

Zheko Angelov has often participated in radio and TV concerts. His masterful performance has won him a great number of admirers.

Nikolai Nenov is also a young performer-instrumentalist. He was born on September 7, 1947 in the village of Samuilovo, Sliven district. His talent for music began to show since an early age. At the age of only eight he played the harmonica quite well. Soon after that he started studying how to play the violin. His interests in the field of folk music remained steady and alongside the violin he studied gadulka. In 1968 he became lecturer in gadulka at the Kotel School of Music. At the "Proslav na haidutstvoto" (Glory to the haiduks) festival in Aglikina Polyana, Sliven, Nikolai Nenov won a silver medal for his performance on gadulka.

In 1976 he graduated from the Higher Music-Pedagogical Institute in Plovdiv, majoring in musical folklore and began work as conductor of the Orchestra of the Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances at the Sliven People's District Council.

Though the violin is not a folk instrument, it has long entered people's life through the artful performances of a number of violinists, who have mastered the characteristics of the Bulgarian folk art. One of the best violinists representative of that art is Nikolai Nenov. He made his first recordings as a folk music performer on violin when still a student, in 1975. He is the composer of the horo tunes included in the present release. The vast number of radio and TV recordings have made him a popular folk instrumentalist, loved by the listeners. – Katya Naumova
