LINER NOTES
"Strike while the iron is hot" this saying characterizes the artistic development of accordionist Veni Petkov, cradled since early childhood in the folk music tradition, reared with the concert performances of popular instrumentalists from his native village of Kosta Perchevo, Vidin district.
When he was thirteen, a dream of his came true he got an accordion as a present. From that time on he has played with inspiration and the enthusiasm of his youth. In 1974 Veni Petkov began work with the Representative Ensemble for Folk Songs and dances "Dunav" in Vidin. Since then he has been co-repetitor (rehearser) of the dance group.
He made his first recordings for Radio Sofia in 1975 as soloist of the Vidin group. Following these are recordings of his solo accordion horos, the issue of several singles by Balkanton Records, and participations in TV programs.
Today the 34-year-old accordionist has a well-deserved place in the development and popularization of the specific "severnyashka" (North Bulgarian) folk music. Being a true interpreter of the North Bulgarian folk style, Veni Petkov offers us a selection of instrumental tunes and horos in his first album. With the melodies included in it we hope to satisfy the taste of the numerous instrumental folk music lovers. The excellent accordionist's art has been admired by vast audiences in the USSR, GDR, Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Austria, FRG, and elsewhere. Nikolay Chochev
