LINER NOTES

For 35 years now the "N.Y. Vaptsarov" Representative Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances at the "otets Paisii" Model Public Reading Club in the town of Sandanski has drawn patriotism, vitality and strength from the pure source of the Bulgarian folk art. In 1951 a group of about 25 enthusiastic amateurs began their activities in order to recreate on the stage the melodious intimacy of the working-bees, the lively rhythms of the horo dances, the original music traditions of the people from this region. Two years later, at the First Festival of amateur art activities of groups from the public reading clubs, the Ensemble won its first recognition and gold medal which were followed by a long list of distinctions: laureate titles and silver medals at the First and Second National Festivals of amateur art activities, gold medals at the national folk festivals in Koprivshtitsa and the "Pirin Sings" regional folk festivals; Laureate titles and gold medals at the Ninth World Festival of Youth and Students, at the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth National Festivals of amateur art activities; a number of diplomas awarded to the Ensemble at home and abroad.

The Ensemble's wide popularity in the district and the whole country make it a regional folk formation of national significance. That is why at the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth National Festivals of amateur art activities in 1974 and 1984 it was granted the title "Representative Ensemble." All these achievements are closely connected with its Chief Artistic Director Metodi Lozanski. And the successful tours of the Ensemble in Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Mongolia, the USSR, Hungary and elsewhere have enlarged the circle of enthusiastic admirers of the beautiful folk art of the Pirin region thus contributing for the strengthening of peace and good understanding among the peoples.

Recorded in about 1986.
