BACKGROUND

Region: Bulgaria
OVERVIEW
The international community of folk song and dance ensembles seized upon the Bulgarian Mûžko trojno, each ensemble renaming it in their particular language and presenting it as an example of their folk dance tradition. Reported versions include:
- Šopska petorka, a Macedonian version.
- Rençbar, a Turkish version.
REFERENCE
- Elsie Ivancich Dunin and Stanimir Višinski present the story of the introduction of Šopska Petorka to the Tanec repertoire on pp. 239-251 of their Dances in Macedonia: Performance Genre Tanec, (Skopje: Ensemble Tanec, 1995). They attribute Šopska Petorka to Tsvetko Michevski, who lived in Bulgaria for a few years before joining Tanec in 1949.
