BACKGROUND
Information: A region.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a country lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland. The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom that shares a land border with another sovereign state, the Republic of Ireland.
The term "United Kingdom" became official in 1801 when the parliaments of Britain and Ireland< each passed an Act of Union, uniting the two kingdoms and creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The United Kingdom fought alongside France, Russia, and (after 1917) the United States, against Germany and its allies in the First World War (1914–1918). The country entered the Second World War by declaring war on Nazi Germany in 1939 after Germany had invaded Poland.
Location: Europe
Language: English is the main language, but Welsh is widely spoken in Wales, and Gaelic is spoken by some people in Scotland.
Religion: Predominantly Christian.
