BACKGROUND
Information: Paula Luv, teacher of Hawai'ian dance.
Paula Luv (born Pankiwskyj) was introduced to folk dancing in 1956 at the International Student Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Conny and Marianne Taylor, and has been dancing ever since. She studied hula with Marian Vaasconcellos, Kau'inealanii Brandt, Billie Beamer, Nona Beamer, Emma Sharpe, and Edna Bekeart.
Paula represented the state of Hawai'i at the 23rd annual University of the Pacific, Stockton, Folk Dance Camp in August of 1970 and taught at the Santa Barbara Folk Dance Conference, both venues in California.
In 1985, Paula received the Alfred Preis Award as an honoree by the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education. She was the choreographer of "Twas the Night and Other Holiday Delights" for the 2000-2001 season of the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, and has been a choreographer for dance groups around the world.
She has been involved as president of the Hawai'i State Dance Council, a member of the University of Hawai'i Women's Campus Club where she taught a class in beginning hula, and as a faculty member of the College of Continuing Education and Community Service where she taught classes in international folk dancing. She also directed the Honolulu International Folk Dancers for their dance performances and is involved with Harmonia, the local band that plays traditional folk music of eastern Europe, ranging from the Danube to the Carpathians, and whose repertoire reflects Hungarian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romanian, Croatian, and Gypsy cultures.
Dances Paula has taught includes many hulas in her career including Kawika, Ku'i Moloka'i, and Pūpū Hinu Hinu.
