BACKGROUND
Information: A country.
Ukraine, sometimes called the Ukraine, is a country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania, Moldova and Hungary to the southwest, Slovakia and Poland to the west, Belarus to the north, Russia to the east, the Sea of Azov to the southeast, and the Black Sea to the south.
Ukrainians entered World War I on the side of both the Central Powers, under Austria and Russia.
Following the Invasion of Poland in September 1939, German and Soviet troops divided the territory of Poland. Thus, Eastern Galicia and Volhynia with their Ukrainian population became part of Ukraine. For the first time in history, the nation was united. The republic was heavily damaged by the war, and it required significant efforts to recover. More than 700 cities and towns and 28,000 villages were destroyed.
